Things to Do in Morro Bay

Morro Bay is small enough to walk and slow enough to enjoy. Most of what makes it worth the trip sits within a mile of the Embarcadero.

The town works best if you treat it as a base rather than a checklist. The Embarcadero — the waterfront strip the hotel sits on — runs a little under a mile end to end, with the Rock anchoring the north end and the estuary opening south toward Los Osos. You can do the whole waterfront on foot in an afternoon.

Beyond the waterfront, the two things people consistently underrate are the estuary and the state park. The estuary is one of the most significant on the California coast and is best seen from a kayak. Morro Bay State Park, a few minutes south, has the natural history museum, the heron rookery and the Black Hill trail, which gives you the best view of the whole bay from above.

If you have more than two days, Montaña de Oro to the south and the Highway 1 run north through Cayucos and Cambria are both worth a half-day each.
